Despite the bitter cold, squirrels seem unstoppable today. They are shaking loose nest debris and it's like a sporadic ticker tape parade out back. And chasing each other like crazy. Sometimes in small packs of three or more. Most often individually from tree to tree, limb to limb. And so limber! One just dangled from a string of cranberries on our deck pine. The string broke, frozen cranberries scattered, and more squirrels converged to squabble over them.
A quick check shows that with an average gestation period of 44 days and births typically occurring in March and April, they are doing a lot more than just keeping warm.
